The Archdiocese of New Orleans reported that Hurricane Ida caused severe damage to churches ,glass pool fence panels, and school buildings in multiple dioceses.Ida made landfall near the Port of Fulchon on August 29 in a dangerous Category 4 storm that slowly passed through southeastern Louisiana.
The archdiocese newspaper, The Clarion Herald, published a list of diocese-by-diocese losses. Famous buildings, such as St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, suffered extensive damage.
According to the Archdiocese, the cathedral’s spires and towers, as well as the roof, lanterns, doors, pillars and stained glass windows were damaged. The parish of the church also suffered broken windows, possible damage to the roof, and damage to the ceiling and walls.
The roof, heating and air-conditioning system, windows and baseball field of St. Charles Catholic High School were damaged. All buildings of St. Joan of Arc School were flooded, and the roof and fence of the church were also damaged. When our Lord ascended to heaven, the diocese wall partially collapsed.
